River Life on the French Broad River

Supporting endangered species in the French Broad River through partnerships and community outreach.

The French Broad River is a 218 mile river known as the “Gemstone of Knoxville.” It begins near the town of Rosman in Transylvania County, North Carolina, and “ends” in Knoxville, where it joins the Holston River to form the Tennessee.

The French Broad River, its tributary creeks and the lands in the corridor, are home to 21 endangered species. Their survival is largely dependent on conservation efforts.

This river is a valuable blueway for recreation such as boating, fishing, swimming, and quiet reflection.

It is also extraordinarily beautiful.
